Abstract:Projects valuation is an essential part of the project management practices, and when it comes to public and government owned organizations it is a public concern, especially when actual costs of some project exceed the announced budget. In IS/IT projects this is mostly the case, therefore evaluating IS/IT projects has become a concern for all organizations adopting information technology projects. These extra costs are usually the consequences of unforeseen risks that appear during project implementation. Financial institutions have approached this problem by using a risk platform, this risk platform offers risk solutions, information and lessons learned to its clients. This paper is focused on IS/IT projects valuation and cohort, it aims to investigate the currently used risk platforms in the financial sector. Using the risk platform is an attempt to make project stakeholders prepared for the unforeseen risks, by taking information from the risk platform. The risk platform contains data about events occurring in all the projects, among others the risk events, solutions and costs in previous projects. Project managers are supposed to act upon the information provided to them to add it to the budget of project in the early development of the business case, thus avoiding the bad reputation attached to the IS/IT projects. The second part of this paper will investigate the use of real options to evaluate the IS/IT projects. Real options are considered a strategic tool, and an approach to turn around risk, therefore they are usually used in projects that involve great uncertainty.
