Abstract:Meaning and identity are relevant in everybody’s lives and they are very suitable for the narrative psychological approach. This review of narrative interventions about meaning and identity has the goal to identify implications for the theory of meaning and identity as well as for practical intervention design. The reviewed interventions were selected if they shared core characteristics with “The Wonderful Life Intervention” by Van de Goor (2017). It was found that the target groups and practical contexts of the interventions are very diverse, that they use content-based, form-based or activity-based techniques to elicit narratives, and that all expected aspects of meaning and identity could be found in the interventions. New implications for theory are that the salience of aspects of meaning and identity varies according to one’s life phase, that meaning and identity are closely related to emotions, and that the links between their aspects differ in strength. Implications for the practice of intervention design are that the broad relevance of meaning and identity for humans is paired with numerous options of design. Careful choices need to be made concerning 1st, 2nd and 3rd order objectives, aspects of meaning and identity to be addressed, and methods.
