Abstract:Preventive interventions in the Netherlands are currently unsustainable, as structural financing is not available. Therefore, in this article a systematic review of the cost-effectiveness literature of combined lifestyle interventions will be performed, and case studies will be conducted to find out whether sustainable ways of financing exist. Search terms and inclusion criteria were based on a systematic review of combined lifestyle interventions. Findings were classified into a number of cost-effectiveness categories. Case studies consisted of semi-structured interviews with project managers and other representatives of pioneer sites and one local non-pioneer site hospital, and reviewing websites and documents pertaining to those projects. The literature search delivered 31 articles that met inclusion criteria. Due to the heterogeneity of results, they were only discussed qualitatively. Seven case studies were conducted. In three cases formal evaluations had been conducted by hospitals, which seemed to agree with the literature. Financing of development came mainly from hospitals’ own budgets and subsidies. It seems that combined lifestyle interventions are good value for money, and have the potential to be cost-saving. Sustainable financing for hospital involvement still needs to become available. More research is necessary to find ways in which this could be achieved.
