Abstract:The uptake of eHealth is vital to keep good quality care available for everyone. Evidence regarding the effectiveness of eHealth is growing, however, implementations in healthcare organizations are lacking. Behavioral intention has been studied for decades. Researchers agree, motivation predicts acceptance. In the context of eHealth acceptance, healthcare professionals' motivation and the role of contextual factors remains an under researched area. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to explore healthcare professionals' motives and the interplay with contextual factors. For this exploratory study, a qualitative research method provides rich data. The self-determination theory was used to explore intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and how they are influenced by social contextual factors. The human, organization, technology-fit model was used to map other contextual factors. Twenty-four healthcare professionals participated in semi-structured interviews. A scenario was developed with people, activities, context and technology method. Results show, healthcare professionals are motivated to accept eHealth when it is in line with their own goals and values. Striking is that both motivations are driven by patients' care. Healthcare professionals' motivations are thwarted by self-oriented, patient-oriented, organization-oriented and technology oriented contextual factors. The present study emphasizes further research into this area and has theoretical and practical implications.
