Abstract:In this report, a research on how communication within an intermodal hinterland transport network can be improved through an information system to increase the efficiency of terminals is presented. The research structure is based on the Grounded Theory approach, in which qualitative and quantitative data are used to develop a theory, which is then tested, in this case using a simulation model. Observations showed that expected times of arrival (ETAs) of barges are unreliable, leading to a mismatch of crane operators and increased barge throughput times. Moreover, calculations of barge throughput times, and therefore also ETAs, were mainly based on the expected number of containers to be (un-)loaded from a barge, ignoring truck and train containers parallelly processed by the same crane. Three forecast methods, using different combinations of the modalities barge, truck and train, were then tested within a simulation model. The forecast method that included barge and truck containers showed the best performance with a decrease in the mean squared error (MSE) of the ETA forecast by 27% for terminals at the end of the network, and a decrease of network throughput times of barges by 12%. Future research should focus on further reducing the MSE.
