Abstract:The Dynamic Balance project focuses on the development of an emotion management application for people with autism as well as research on design techniques and sensory preferences in the context of ASD. First, both the scope and the problem of this project are defined and explained. Then, relevant literature research is first conducted, followed by a review of existing technologies in the field of emotion management. Results of the literature search suggest that simplicity in design, clarity of feedback as well as consideration of user’s individual preferences are the key pillars of designing software in this context. In the method section, the choice of the iterative design approach is discussed and requirements are set up. The first iteration of the app is a mockup that highlights the functionality of the application. The second prototype contains screen designs of the application, and the third prototype is the implementation of those screen designs in an actual mobile application form. From first iteration to the final design, the changes are made based on user as well as expert and use-test survey evaluation results: blue has been made a primary color, styles of “stress-symbols” have been changed, and a possibility of audio recording has been made. The final iteration of Dynamic Balance is a system of two applications: mobile and wearable, with an ability to save stressful moments, evaluate those moments and reflect on them. The system has various customization options such as color and style of UI elements. After the final design is made and evaluated, the answer to the main research question of this project is given based on the results of evaluation and topic research.
