| Abstract: | In medical situations, communication and trust between physician and patient are key to a smooth diagnosis and treatment process. In this research, traditional supporting communication methods (a brochure and a video), as well as the new technology of augmented reality (AR) are examined in how they influence patient experience during a consultation that confronts them with an invasive medical procedure. The purpose of this research is to improve communication between physician and patient and improve patient experience by looking at information provision and the opportunities for AR in this context. This was done through an exploratory case study, divided into two parts. In study 1a, the communication methods were compared quantitatively, through a questionnaire, which provided statistical evidence for the positive function of AR and audiovisuals in physician-patient communication. In study 1b, the reasons people had for the positive reaction to AR were examined through interviews. The results give clear directions for future research and possible guidelines on the opportunities and pitfalls of AR in the context of physician-patient communication. |
