Abstract:Computational thinking (CT) is about breaking complex problems into small, comprehensible steps, which is an important skill for programming. This research report aims at investigating how non-traditional teaching methods can be used to teach children in the age of five to seven the skill of CT in a playful and comprehensible way. Furthermore, it intends to explore how a product can be designed such that teachers in primary education are encouraged to use it. Literature on non-traditional teaching methods has been reviewed and results show that learning is most effective when supported by active engagement, immediate feedback and collaborative assignments. Six ideas are generated, resulting in the final idea of CoDuo. CoDuo is a physical game that teaches children to give small, specific instructions to reach a shared goal. User-tests showed that the product reaches the goal of teaching children the skill of CT as well as additional skills like communication and fine motor skills. The game CoDuo is designed such that it makes use of simple, familiar elements like blocks and playing cards and fits into the current curriculum, which in all probability motivates primary school teachers to introduce it in class.
