Abstract:In this report the first steps are taken to introduce Lean manufacutring, a management philosophy, in a poultry processing plant. With the use of the systematic method "Lean Thinking" the weaknesses within the manufacturing system are identified and adressed. First, the customer values of the client are identified with the help of a Quality, Delivery and Control approach and Key Performance Indicators. We gain an understanding how these values are expressed by the current manufacturing system and how they are affected by measures on different planning and control levels. Second, weaknesses in the system are identified as wastes. Six of the biggest wastes are prioritized and their root causes are identified and adressed. It became evidend that most customer values are neglected by Planning and Control. Furthermore, the forecasting of order quantities is very primitive and mostly based on intuition. This results in daily overproduction, big deviations in the production planning, chaos on the shop floor and the need of enormous inventories and buffers. Lean manufacturing provides a systematic approach to address eliminate these wastes systematicly.
