| Abstract: | During the past decades, noncognitive traits and their contributions to a satisfied and fulfilled life have been extensively studied. A noncognitive trait which attracted much attention during more recent years is grit. Defined as passion and perseverance for long-term goals, grit plays an important role in numerous areas of life from academic achievement and career endorsement to athleticism and mental health. Grit can be assessed by means of the Grit-S, an 8-item self-report questionnaire which comprises two subscales representing consistency of interest and perseverance of effort. While research has demonstrated the importance of grit, the validity and reliability of the Grit-S remain disputed. The present study investigated the psychometric properties of the Grit-S in an international sample (N = 272) by means of confirmatory factor analysis and correlational analysis using Mplus and SPSS. Results support the Grit-S as a valid and reliable measurement instrument of grit, providing evidence for its factorial validity, internal consistency, convergent and criterion validity. Moreover, the present study found support for the multidimensionality of the Grit-S, highlighting the importance of its subscales. However, results show the Grit-S to be non-invariant across different nationalities and age groups. Hence, care should be taken when using the Grit-S in cross-cultural and cross-age studies as scores from different nationalities and age groups may not be directly comparable. |
