Abstract:Osteoporosis is a bone remodeling problem which occurs more and more as the population ages. This research focuses on osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Commonly used methods are a pedicle screw (PS) system, vertebro- and kyphoplasty, and vertebral body stenting. Because of the multiple disadvantages these methods present, a new method has to be found. The requirements for this method were determined to be safe, effective, non-invasive, durable, user-friendly, affordable and universal. In literature, several methods in development have been found. Besides, several methods have been drawn up by means of brainstorming. The most promising of these last methods were assessed on basis of the requirements and compared to the current methods. The ideas in this study could be complemented and improved, since these are based on brainstorming. This study only focuses on elderly, but it can be researched whether it would also be applicable in children. Of the new methods that were suggested in this study, crisscross fixation in combination with spinal loop rectangle (CC-SLR), CC-SLR in combination with PSs and an inflatable ball filled with fluid or little cement balls in the vertebral body are best. These methods should be researched further before they could become applicable.
