| Abstract: | The field of prevention of anxiety disorders in adults is in a premature state compared to prevention of other mental disorders, which is why the current scientific status of universal, selective and indicated prevention programs for anxiety in adults needed to be updated. A systematic search of four electronic databases was conducted, including articles published between 2000 and January 2018. Eligibility criteria were (1) interventions described or designed as universal, selective and indicated prevention programs, (2) targeting anxiety symptoms, (3) focusing on adult populations (>18) and (4) studies designed as RCTs that examined effects of interventions. Eleven studies (n = 2661 participants, 75.5% female) based on Positive Psychology, ACT, and CBT for adults met eligibility criteria. The categorization into universal, selective and indicated prevention turned out to be problematic and lead to the categorization of additional mixed recruitment approaches. Nine studies found significant effects for preventive interventions, including one universal, one selective, three indicated prevention programs and four mixed recruitment approaches. This systematic review demonstrated that the conceptualization of universal, selective and indicated prevention still suffers from issues concerning the implementation in practice. Nevertheless, effective preventive interventions based on positive psychological, acceptance and commitment and cognitive behavioral approaches were identified. |
