Abstract:The energy transition is a constantly moving and developing endeavour, nowadays focusing more on the decentral supply by renewable energy sources. Since their supply is uncontrollable and the worldwide energy demand is increasing, there are more peak loads and the grid becomes congested. In order to create a sustainable grid which is reliable and affordable, a lot of changes have to be made. Blockchain is an upcoming technology empowering fully decentralized platforms for payments, contracts and data exchange. Characteristics as decentralization and peer to peer seem to fit the energy transition. This paper derives a classification of current blockchain initiatives in the energy sector and provides four more use cases for blockchain supporting the energy transition, which are not yet applied. For Energy eXchange Enablers, this research indicates potential use cases for their product portfolio. Two designs are created for the cases with the highest potential fitting the product's strategy. Each design exists of a conceptualization using the state-of-the-art from current initiatives, smart contract interfaces and a demo existing of a basic implementation of the interfaces and a decentralized application.
