Abstract:Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is a promising treatment method of anxiety symptoms. CFT focuses on strengthening self-compassion, also called the reassuring self, where someone learns to handle themselves in a friendly way. On the other side is the inadequate and hating self where someone is very critical to themselves. The aim of this research was to study whether a self-help intervention was effective in reducing anxiety symptoms and if reductions were mediated by reassuring-, inadequate- and hated self. The RCT design of this study consisted of two groups: an intervention- and a control group. The data of 198 participants was used. In this study was found that the anxiety symptoms, the inadequate self and the hated self were significantly reduced in the intervention-group compared to the control-group and that the reassuring self was significantly increased after 3 and 6 months. When the reassuring-, the inadequate and hated self were analyzed together in one model, there was found that only the reassuring self, had a significant mediation effect. The results of this study show that the self-help intervention ‘Compassion as key to happiness, beyond stress and self-criticism’ is effective in reducing the level of anxiety symptoms and improving the other outcome measures when compared to the control group on all the measuring moments. Next to that was found that the effects of the intervention on anxiety symptoms can be explained by the mediating effect of the reassuring self.
