Abstract:This assignment is being fulfilled for Identification Systems, an in-house business unit of the company Nedap. This business unit is a leading specialist in systems for long distance identification, wireless vehicle detection and city access control. The assignment will be covering the Electronic Parking License (EPL), as part of the SENSIT solution. SENSIT is a platform that is used for vehicle detection and mainly offers parking solutions. Typical SENSIT applications are guidance, enforcement and reporting. The platform consists of in-ground parking sensors connected to a wireless network. Each sensor monitors the presence of a vehicle in a parking bay in realtime. The SENSIT solution is sold worldwide. In order to identify vehicles, Nedap has introduced the Electronic Parking License (EPL) to the SENSIT solution. The EPL is an in-vehicle device that ensures availability of parking bays for designated audiences. With the EPL, the SENSIT system can detect if a parking space is legitimately used by the right audience. Alternatively, an app can be used which performs in a similar way as the EPL. Nedap believes that the design of the device can be improved. A redesign of the EPL must improve the aesthetical expression of the device, but should also improve usability, size and mounting. Thus, the main question is: ‘How can the design of the EPL be improved?’ Nedap indicated that the design of a physical embodiment of the EPL is the most important aim of the assignment. The goal of this redesign is to increase the number of sold devices. Based on interviews with employees of Identification Systems, the main problems of the current design were investigated. Thereafter, requirements of a new design are set. Scenario based design was used to set the correct requirements. First of all, a redesign must appeal to the eye and correspond to the product characteristics of Identification Systems. The design must be human-centered, so mounting and usage should be improved. Furthermore, a more compact size and lower costs are expected. The results of the assignment are two different concepts that both offer improvement on the current design. These concepts offer a better design that fits the style of Identification Systems and the SENSIT solution. Additionally, the size and costs of the EPL are reduced. User friendliness and durability are improved, by adding a self-sufficient energy supply to the EPL. Therefore, users will not have to replace its batteries. Besides a redesign of the EPL, recommendations are given that will improve the design of the architecture of the EPL and the app. By composing usage applications Nedap can improve their communication to the customers. By doing so, customers will purchase the EPL more often. Furthermore, the EPL can be connected directly to the app. Also, a payment system can be integrated in the architecture of the EPL system. Nedap can implement these recommendations, which will improve the EPL’s system-level design. In combination with the new EPL design, the number of sold EPL devices can be increased. The offered concepts have to be optimized for production. Also, specific electronical components must be chosen, in order to determine the exact dimensions of the device. Although new suggestions on the architecture of the systems are made, Nedap can choose to implement the physical embodiment first.
