Abstract:The cruise ship industry is a stable growing industry in the last 10 years. Due to increasing number of ships and ship sizes, the shipyard are looking for innovative solutions for weight saving. Therefore, the overall objective of Accedoo is to expand their market and develop a new watertight composite door for the cruise ship industry. The composite door that Accedoo currently is producing, do not fit the requirements. This is mostly due to its functionality and appearance. These doors do not function correctly for the cruise ship’s diverse set of users, which require a smoother functionality and more aesthetic appearance. The new door will be stalled in passengers’ areas thus having more attention for appearance. A more aesthetic and smoother functioning composite door can provide the solution for the market. The aim of the thesis is to map the requirements of the stakeholders for a new composite door for cruise ships and develop feasible conceptual components regarding the door mechanism that will have the functionality and appearance that is required. A comprehensive analysis is presented regarding the current market, users, appearance and space budget. The stakeholders are presented and their roles in the design process of a passenger ship. Also the expectations of the market have been estimated by gathering all information on marine doors of the competitors. The users have been defined to estimate the desired appearance and functionality of the users. Finally, the available space have been estimated for the internal components. Using the information of the comprehensive analysis, a list of requirements have been established to summarize the requirements of the users, Accedoo, the shipyard and the classification societies. Subsequently, ideas have been generated for the external components to acquire the required appearance and functionality. Also, ideas have been presented for the the functionality of the internal components namely: closing system, locking system and calibration system. For the external components, a diverse set of concepts has been presented for the handles, locks and calibration components. The ideas have been developed in detail and the required components and their orientation have been defined. The dimensions have been estimated to acquire knowledge on the feasibility of the internal components.Finally, three concepts have been established for the external components. Handle-to-pin system is suggested to provide the best results. Also two different locking systems are advised to develop further. Both systems can be integrated with the handle-to-pin system. Lastly, a rotational calibration system is advised. The results of this thesis is a list of requirements of this new market. Furthermore, feasible concepts have been created to be used as possible solutions for opening, locking and calibrating the door. The concepts are focused on the functionality and appearance. The feasibility is estimated in regard to available space. The aim of the thesis is to map the requirements of the stakeholders for a new composite door for cruise ships and develop feasible conceptual components regarding the door mechanism that will have the functionality and appearance that is required.
