Abstract:Patients with failing hearts are provided with medical therapy or mechanical assistance to support the blood circulation. Reliable mechanical circulation with or without medication is necessary as short term support, while patients are evaluated for further treatment. Further steps can be placement of a long term mechanical support device or a heart transplantation. Each mechanical assistance device has its own advantages, like more cardiac output or less invasive than other treatments. However disadvantages remain like dislocation of pumps, damage of tissue and not enough cardiac output to the body. Still e_orts made in mechanical circulatory support do not result in a signi_cant decrease of mortality rate. Doctors and engineers want to develop a mechanical circulatory support device that uses advantages and improves disadvantages of earlier devices to decrease mortality rate. Development of a mechanical circulatory support device is the subject of this assignment with as main goal: Develop a minimal invasive mechanical circulatory support device, that supports the left ventricle and cardiac output in patients with heart failure. To achieve the main goal of this project some objectives are set: • Deliver a compact system for minimal invasive catheter insertion • Increase the cardiac output, decrease the workload of the heart • Support the left ventricle
