Abstract:This thesis discusses written self-debriefing by employees in healthcare. Written self debriefing will reflect on the participants own acting by responding on debriefingsquestions on paper. This process doesn´t be scaffolded by a facilitator or expert. In healthcare it is expected that employees will develop themselves continuously, both on knowledge and skills. Healthcare institutions spend fast amounts of money and time to keep their employees competent and capable. At the same time large savings within healthcare are common, causing a search for needed reductions, while keeping knowledge and skills of employees at the required level. This investigation aims to find an answer whether self debriefing will increase the knowledge and skills of employees in healthcare. Two different conditions have been compared: receiving verbal and receiving written self debriefing. The investigation has been done with 29 employees, split over the two conditions. Participants first carried out a nursing treatment called compression bandaging. The first 15 participants then got verbal feedback; the remaining 14 answered self debriefing questions. Thereafter all participants were tested on knowledge, and they had to carry out the nursing treatment again. On both occasions the participants were judged according a national validated protocol. This protocol judges all necessary steps. In both cases the scores of the treatment improved significantly when comparing the first and second try. After the second try, the participants that got verbal feedback scored significantly higher than the participants that answered the debriefing questions. The knowledge score was equal for both groups. This investigation proves that written self debriefing increases the skilfulness of healthcare employees. More research is necessary to investigate which type of self debriefing is most effective and which support could optimise the process.
