Abstract:Rijnstate Hospital Arnhem has an Acute Medical Unit (AMU). The AMU is a department for patients who were transferred from the emergency room or the outpatient clinic. The patients can be admitted to several medical specialties. A patient stays maximum 48 hours in the department, whereafter the patient is transferred to the specialty department or discharged to home. The patients in the AMU have different levels of fitness. Different problems influence the workload of the nurses. One way to create a balanced workload is the use of an intensity of care model. The Jones Dependency Tool is used as the intensity of care model. From the measurement period, the results of the patients’ intensity of care and nurses’ workload were analysed. The nurses’ estimated and the calculated intensity of care matched (correlation of 0.718). In the measurement period, the intensity of care was mostly low (category 1 or 2). However, the relationships in the measurement period are not as how they were experienced in practice. This is caused by missing data from the shifts with a high workload and patients with high intensity of care.
