| Abstract: | Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that often takes a chronic course and is characterized by severe symptoms with high negative impact on affected individuals, their environment and society. Traditional treatments for schizophrenia primarily focus on the reduction of symptoms but still rates of full recovery remain low. Positive psychology interventions (PPI’s) rather focus on improving participants’ well-being, strengths, resources and skills and thereby may form new effective methods in the treatment of schizophrenia. By now little is known about the effectiveness of PPI’s on well-being and psychopathology of schizophrenia patients. Hence, this literature review focuses on available PPI’s in the treatment of this disorder. Through a systematic search strategy 17 eligible studies were found and examined in terms of intervention characteristics, effectiveness and acceptability. Results show high levels of acceptability of PPI’s and positive effects on well-being as well as schizophrenia symptoms. One high quality study reported long-lasting positive effects on quality of life (p = 0.035, 0.058 and 0.014, respectively; d = 0.29–0.34), so that it can be concluded that PPI’s are promising measures in the treatment of schizophrenia. Future research is needed in order to examine which PPI’s work best and are most effective for schizophrenia patients. |
