Abstract:The market for ultra narrowband systems, which have intrinsic low data-rate, has not been given much attention in the history of Communication systems. However, with the emerging Wireless Sensor Networks and Internet of Things this changes, because of advantages in terms of power efficiency and resistance to interference. For these applications, low datarate is not an issue. Ultra-narrowband systems for duplex communication have not been thoroughly studied. The Telecommunication Engineering (TE) group is in a cooperation project called “Slow Wireless” with Integrated Circuit Design (ICD) and Computer Architectures and Embedded Systems (CAES) to fill this gap and develop the missing knowledge. In this master thesis, the influence and behavior of different types of medium access control (MAC)-layer protocols for low data rate uplink communication channels of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is studied in terms of energy efficiency, network capacity, throughput and latency, by considering MAC protocols, bitrate, package length, retransmission strategy and other relevant parameters for an idealized, yet realistic, network setup. The energy efficiency, network capacity, throughput and delay is quantified by simulation and, if possible, analysis. A comparison will be made based on the AWGN channel model. Furthermore, random effects such as frequency uncertainty and phase noise will be considered.
