| Abstract: | The concepts of identity and culture have long expanded beyond the idea of personal and cultural identity to fields like institutional identities and business culture. Identity has a great impact on the EU. It fulfils various complex functions. It is a base of legitimation, directly connecting the role in society and self understanding. Institutions act according to their self-image - their identity. It shows how it interprets the past and future path. Two prominent theories in the field of EU identity are examined in this work. Manners Normative Power Europe and the postcolonial theories offer different perspectives on the identity the EU prescribes to itself, its development and role as the foundation of actions. This bachelor thesis studies the identity given by the self-image of the European Union as presented in the discourse over the free trade agreement between the EU, Peru and Columbia and its relating documents, based on these two schools of thought. It points out how the EU defines itself, formulates and uses identity politics within its actions. Furthermore, it reflect over the explanatory value and relevance of these theories for the discourse over EU identity. The research model is a qualitative Theory testing case study. |
