Abstract:The concept of transport noise is introduced and studied. It is shown that two different types of multiplicative noise, transport noise and so-called fluctuation-dissipation noise, behave qualitatively different when studied in terms of their effects on the Lorenz system. In particular the sum of the Lyapunov exponents for this system is different for the two types of noise. Also a stochastic version of a robust, deterministic numerical algorithm for the determination of Lyapunov exponents is posed. It computes the deterministic values for the individual Lyapunov exponents with reasonable accuracy considering the numerical methods used to solve the underlying equations. Finally, a stochastic variational principle is used to derive stochastic rotating shallow water equations and it is shown that they have the same conservation laws as the deterministic version.
