Abstract:Up until now there is only little information on which factors influence the spatial distance in groups between the individuals. It is known that there are different spatial distances between the leaders of different types of groups. In this research it will analysed of the factors trust and status of the leader have an influence on the leader-follower distance. There were three different conditions in this research. A formal group with a leader with possible high status, a formal group with a leader with possible low status and an informal group. For the formal groups the leader was assigned by the researcher based on the age of the participants. In the informal condition there was no leader assigned by the researcher and the group started the experiment without a leader. The groups had the task to find different spots on the campus of the University of Twente as quickly as possible. In order to track the movements and the spatial distance every participant was equipped with a GPS tracker. When the groups where done with finding the spots they were asked to fill out a questionnaire in order the measure their trusting stance, their trust in the perceived leader, the group cohesion and their inclusion in the group. The results showed no significant influence of trust or status on the spatial distance between the group members and the leader. It seemed though as if there is a connection between the amount of acquaintances in the group and the distance to the leader of the group. It is possible that the fact that all of the participants where students of the University of Twente and many of them knew each other had an influence on the measured distances. It can be concluded that due to the expected different leader-follower distances which were explored in research before, but not in this one, the group dynamics in this research where different. There might be other behavioural factors that influence the leader-follower distance in groups with a lot of acquaintances.
