| Abstract: | Research shows that in current primary education, highly gifted children are not given the chance to flourish. This is caused by primary teachers not knowing enough about giftedness and as a consequence not having the skills to help them to function optimally. As this leads to possible underachievement by highly gifted children and possible difficulties later in life, this problem should be solved as soon as possible. A potential way of doing this is by developing a serious game to help teachers gain knowledge and learn skills to improve their signaling of highly gifted children and also improve how they subsequently deal with them. Through interviews with both experienced teachers and highly gifted children themselves, information was collected on the knowledge and skills that should be incorporated in the game. Results show that it is very important for teachers to know about the different features of giftedness so they can timely recognize it. They should also know there are different types of gifted children. Furthermore, they should know about the feelings gifted children experience. When it comes to skills, the teachers should have the qualities and flexibility to adjust their lessons to fit and challenge the highly gifted child and they should develop a feel for signaling gifted children through gaining experience. Next to that they should obtain a set of concrete skills such as giving the child room for growth, good communication with parents, adjusting their approach to every child and daring to admit their own vulnerabilities. The data also showed that even experienced teachers sometimes still have difficulties dealing with highly gifted children and those difficulties could be emphasized in the game. |
