Abstract:Rijnstate Hospital Arnhem is working on a project to renew the operating theatre. As a result of this project, the operating theatre will be expanded with the elective admission ward (EAW), a new ward that will be placed next to the operating theatre and will admit all day treatment patients and the inpatients not already admitted. The current processes at the day treatment and inpatient wards of Rijnstate Hospital are looked into to gain insight on the patients that will be seen at the elective admission ward. This research is further conducted to gain more insight into the elective admission ward and which decisions have to be taken into account. The optimal number of beds, chairs and personnel at the elective admission ward are determined and how the flow of beds, personnel and patients can be optimised. A benchmark study and simulation model are used to generate the results. Based on the results of the simulation model and the results of the sensitivity analysis the optimal scenario would consist of patients arriving 60 minutes before the planned preoperative procedures, having 3 intake rooms, 1 room for the medication verification and a minimum of 18 beds and 20 chairs.
