Abstract:Responding to the threats of global warming, the Paris Agreement was adopted among 195 countries on 12 December 2015. The central aim of the Paris Agreement is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius. More ambitious mitigation actions are needed to achieve the goals in an efficient way. Increasing the transparency of climate change policies in countries and sectors is very important for identifying where more or urgent actions are needed. During the internship, a spreadsheet-based Excel tool was developed to track and predict overall and sectoral Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of a country. The tool is developed in a sectoral-level bottom-up methodology, which provides detailed information and increased transparency in every sector. It allows users to define different scenarios corresponding to emission-related indicators on a sectoral level, which can then be aggregated to a country-level. During the internship period, the electricity sector, cement sector, steel sector and transport sector have been developed in the tool. This work will contribute towards an improved understanding of decarbonisation trends in overall and sectoral GHG emissions in countries.
