Abstract: | A widely used way for people to gain information on potential risk situations is through social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) (Palen, Vieweg, Liu, & Hughes, 2009). Using information on these platforms, however, might be risky because the veracity of the information cannot be guaranteed (fake news). In this study self-protective behaviour will be researched after subjects see a news item where commenters either validate or doubt the authenticity of the message. Predictors of self-protective behaviour will also be researched. The results have shown that there was no significant difference in self-protective behaviour between the two groups. Other results showed that the interaction between the researched determinants is not significant either. Looking at the determinants separately showed age and education to be significant predictors whereas gender and SNS use were not. |
