Abstract:The term ‘coping mechanisms’ is a known concept when it comes to research about stress. Until now it has been assumed that there exists a positive correlation between ‘problem-focussed’ coping strategies and health. The exact details of this correlation have yet to be examined. For example, it could be that this correlation exists because of the mediator ‘eustress’. A negative correlation between ‘emotion-focussed’ coping strategies and health via distress has also been assumed. In addition it has been demonstrated that a flexible use of ‘problem-focussed’ coping as well as ‘emotion-focussed’ coping could lead to decline in distress. Whether or not the mixed use of coping strategies has an effect on eustress or health as well is not known yet. These indications were tested through this research. Students were given questionnaires about coping mechanisms, eustress & distress and health, which they had to fill in. It was noticed that the use of ‘problem-focussed’ coping strategies had a positive effect on eustress, which in turn had a positive effect on the overall health. The use of just ‘emotion-focussed’ coping strategies as well as the flexible use of ‘problem-focussed’ and ‘emotion-focussed’ coping strategies together had no effect on eustress or distress and no effect on the student´s overall health. This suggests that the use of ‘emotion-focussed’ coping strategies has generally no effect on the perception of eustress or distress, which could explain why there is no relation between ‘emotion-focussed’ coping and the student´s overall health. Since this is the first time that there has ever been done research about these indications, it is important to gather more insight about other possible factors that could play a role in the relation between the use of different coping strategies, the perception of eustress or distress and the relation between coping strategies and health. This insight could help students to handle stressful situations better by adapting their coping styles. By doing this, students will experience an increase in eustress and a decrease in distress, which will in turn have better consequences for their overall health status.
