| Abstract: | There has been a lot of research done about the Bystander-Effect, but not from the perspective of victims. In this research the intent was to explore if there is an influence of the presence of bystanders and offering an apology on victims by doing an experiment. Offering an apology influences Need to Belong. Offering an apology results in a lower level of Need to Belong in comparison with not offering an apology. Furthermore, the presence of bystanders influences perpetrator-blame. The presence of bystanders results in more perpetrator-blame in comparison with the absence of bystanders. With caution there can be stated that the presence of bystanders influences the perception of safety and self-blame. When there are no bystanders present there is a higher level of safety perception and more self-blame in comparison with the absence of bystanders. Futhermore, with caution there can be stated that the presence of bystanders and offering an apology influence other-blame. There is less other-blame when there are bystanders present and when there is no apology offered in comparison with offering an apology and when there are no bystanders present. |
