Abstract:Introduction: In the Netherlands, 142.000 people suffer from heart failure and this number is expected to grow to 195.000 in 2025. This makes heart failure a significant problem. There are many causes for heart failure, which makes it difficult to choose the right treatment. Usually a treatment is a bridge to transplant. The purpose of this study was to investigate if heart failure can be treated with a shape memory material. The study concerned which shape memory material and which design would increase the ejection fraction (EF) of the left ventricle to an average of 40% per heartbeat. Method: To determine the material that suits the purpose best, a list of requirements was drafted. Shape memory alloys (SMAs), shape memory polymers (SMPs), ionic polymer metal composites (IPMCs) and two-way shape memory polymers were compared with each other using literature studies. With help of a practical research, the best design was determined. A setup where a tube or respiratory balloon represents the heart was used. SMA wires with different diameters (0.10, 0.15, 0.25 and 0.38 mm) and lengths (23, 35, 55.5 and 71.5 cm) were used. The wires were wrapped around the tube or respiratory balloon with different distances between the windings (0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 cm). Results: The Nitinol alloy (NiTi) and the Nitinol-copper alloy (NiTiCu) came out best from the literature research and were used in the practical research. The NiTi alloy with a diameter of 0.38 mm and a length of 71.5 cm, with a distance of 0.5 cm between the windings, gave the highest EF. This was 0.90%. Conclusion: The achieved EF was far below 70%, so an average of 40% over four heartbeats was not created. This means that the used design was not sufficient. Recommendations that could lead to a higher EF were made.
