Abstract:Urolithiasis is a severe problem in developing countries even as the mainly used treatment there, open surgery. The question considered in this research is: “In which way can ESWL principles be adapted to produce a low-cost lithotripter which is capable of fragmenting calculi via focussed shock waves, and can be applied in patient treatments in limited clinical environments in developing countries?” The hypothesis is that creating a shock wave with car parts is possible. Experiments to see what the possibilities are, have been done and described. Electrohydraulic, electromagnetic and piezoelectric mechanisms for shock wave generation are described. Because of multiple factors electrohydraulic shock wave generation was chosen to use as basic principle for the downgraded lithotripter. The setup was created to investigate whether it was possible to create a shock wave in water using a spark plug and an ignition coil. High voltage is needed to generate the spark, which was generated in demineralised water. Data show that a plasma bubble is being generated with a spark plug and ignition coil and thus, an acoustic wave is created. Further development might lead to creating a shock wave. To continue this research several aspects have to be considered.
