Abstract:When a cyclist is racing at velocities higher than 15 m=s, the aerodynamic drag is the largest contributor to the resistive force felt by the cyclist. In order to overcome resistance a cyclist has to deliver a total power output from which about 90 % is necessary to overcome the aerodynamic drag. In order to reduce this aerodynamic resistance and to increase aerodynamic knowledge wind tunnel tests can be performed at the Flanders' Bike Valley (FBV) wind tunnel in Paal-Beringen (Belgium). Flanders' Bike Valley is a Belgian bottom-up industry cluster collaboration which focusses on open innovation in the bicycling industry. Next to that the new wind tunnel is up and running from 1 april 2016 and is creating a knowledge base for cycling related companies. Together with an incubation centre the wind tunnel is gaining more and more insight in aerodynamics which is stimulating innovation in the cycling sector. The main task during this internship was to (re)design the housing/mounting of the loadcell which is located within the wind tunnel. This design had to be compatible with multiple types of bicycles and also had to be aerodynamic such that it didn't affected the flow in the test section. Next to that the flow within the windtunnel had to be calibrated. And as a side-project an exhibition carousell was designed which will be in an exhibition booth next january at the Velofollies (a bike show in Belgium). For this side-project the complete structure and driving mechanisme had to be designed.
