Abstract:The magneto caloric effect(MCE) is a possible way of transporting heat with a minimal ecological impact. This can be done by implementing the MCE in an active magneto caloric regenerator (AMR).. To prove the thermodynamics a 0D model has been created. The material properties are of great importance to describe the MCE. The Mean Field Theory (MFT) is used to describe the material properties of gadolinium. The AMR can be used as an heat pump which is modelled in a 2D domain using gadolinium as the MCM. For this assignment Comsol Multiphysics is used. The 2D model is validated by looking at experimental outcomes, where the model is representing the experimental device. A maximum temperature span is found when using gadolinium as an MCM in a heat pump. In order to increase this temperature span the use a material family of Manganese-Iron-Phosphor and Silicon. The materials exhibit a giant magneto caloric effect. It appears that this material family can be used as an MCM where the purpose of the heat pump is to transport heat from an infinite cold heat source.
