| Abstract: | Objective: Emotional dysfunction is an important feature of the Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and includes emotional vulnerability and emotional dysregulation. Anger is the most prominent emotion that people with BPD features are vulnerable for and that they have difficulties with to regulate. But self-conscious emotions like shame also seem to play a role in the emotional dysfunction of people with BPD features. The purpose of this study was to find out if and to what extent people with BPD features (1) are vulnerable for shame, in that they exhibit a higher baseline level of shame, a shame-specific reactivity and/or a delayed return to the baseline level of shame, and if and to what extent they (2) have difficulties with the regulation of shame, thus make use of maladaptive shameregulationstrategies. Methods: The search for eligible literature resulted in 28 articles. Results: The results of this literature review reveal that people with a clinical significant level of BPD features report an increased baseline level of shame, have a shame-prone implicit self-concept, and make use of maladaptive shameregulationstrategies like self-inflicted injury, anger-rumination and experiential avoidance via secondary emotions like anger. Conclusion: Shame seems to play an important role in the emotional dysfunction of people with BPD features and often seems to be accompanied by secondary emotions like anger. Because the expression of anger usually is more conspicuous than the expression of shame, it should be paid attention for indications of underlying shame. Whose validation should help to limit anger-related emotions and facilitate a more adaptive way to deal with shame (i.e. adaptive shameregulationstrategies). |
