Abstract:Introduction: Depression is the mental disorder with the highest prevalence in the world. There is an indication that self-criticism predicts depression. Self-critics have high standards and judge themselves harshly. Self-criticism has two different components: hated self and inadequate self. Een antagonist van self-criticism is selfcompasion. It was hypothesized that a new compassion-training reduces depression and self-criticism and on the other hand increases self-compassion. Second, was hypothesized that it should function as a mediator in reducing depression. Method: There was a randomized controlled trial design with a waitinglist control and an experimental group. Data of 213 participants from the normal population was used. To explore the effectiveness from the training repeated measures ANOVAs were examined. For the exploration of mediation was a regression analysis used. Results: The results show that the self-compassion training was effective in reducing depression and self-criticism and increasing self-compassion. Furthermore, findings show that a reduction of depression was mediated by self-criticism. Discussion: The mediation implies that self-criticism is an important factor which influences depressive symptoms. This study presents findings that highlight the use of selfcompassion. The integration of self-compassion exercises can show people from the normal population an efficient way to reduce depressive symptoms by influencing self-criticism.
