Abstract:Positive mental health care is mainly focused on the promotion of wellbeing. This can be realised with the help of positive psychology interventions. The self-help book ‘This is your life’ is as such an intervention that increases wellbeing and stimulates client change. This study evaluates how client change is experienced by the participants, during the positive psychology intervention ‘This is your life’. In this study elements of The Change Interview were used to gain more knowledge about the process of client change during the intervention. And to learn what the characteristics of positive (client) change are. To do this the following research questions were asked; (1) How many positive changes are named by the research group? (2) What are the most important positive changes, experienced by the research group? (3) What are the reasons for positive changes according to the research group? (4) Does the number of experienced positive changes of each participant correlate with the total score on the MHC-SF after the intervention (T1)? The participants (n=101) filled out an online questionnaire about client change and its perceived reasons for change. Answers were analysed through a content analysis. This resulted in two coding schemes, one about the mentioned positive changes and one about the reasons for positive change. The answers of the participants were transformed into quantitative data. The total number of experienced positive changes for each participant were correlated with their total score on the MHC-SF (T1) after the intervention.Nine reasons of change and eight different kinds of positive change were found. The most important positive changes were ‘being more positive in life, more aware of (positive) emotions, state of mind and expressions’, ‘increased self-compassion, self-acceptance and self-confidence’, ‘more resilience and better coping-skills’, ‘better understanding of strengths and flow experiences’ and ‘better relations and communication’. The most important reasons for positive change were the intervention (the book and the exercises) and things outside of the intervention (‘being more aware’ or ‘self-discovery’). No correlation was found (r=-0.007) between the number of positive changes and the total score on the MHC-SF (T1). This study shows that all the elements of the intervention ‘This is your life’ helped the participants to experience positive change. There is, however, a difference between client change experienced by the participants and well-being measured by the MHC-SF.
