Abstract:People who have grown up in a criminogenic environment, but show no signs of criminal behavior themselves are called ‘resisters’. This research will show the perspectives of three resisters and suggest reasons as to why they been able to deviate from crime. There were two interviews about their lives. These life stories were analyzed with the Grounded theory. By reading literature it appears that ‘self-control’ and ‘resilience’ correlate with the exposure of criminal behavior, that’s why the resisters had to fill in questionnaires about it. The three resisters did not have any more or less resilience or self-control compared to the norm-group. Themes found after analyzing the life stories were: ‘Perception criminogenic context’, ‘Emotions and feelings towards family members and hard times’, ‘Future perception’ and ‘Resilience’. It is concluded that the themes are correlated and that the resisters themselves did not think criminal conduct would better their lives. Despite adversities they were resilient enough to endure. They stay away from criminal conduct because of their good relationship with one or more members of their family, who motivated them to go to school. They were able to see criminal conduct apart from their future careers because they would get a degree.
