Abstract:Introduction: In a competitive market for bariatric surgery departments, it is necessary to define the factors that influence the preference for a specific provider. This study focusses on the factors behind the general practitioners’ hospital choice. Methods: An exploratory study was carried out comprising of a literature review and a qualitative interview study. Results and Conclusions: In the case of obesity patients, the GPs make the choice focusing on the entire trajectory of the treatment and not only the surgery itself. The GPs prefer to obtain information about the hospitals’ quality through patient feedback and hospital educational programs. For availability of specific services the GPs are mostly using digital sources of information. The GPs think that for the patients themselves, the most important factors influencing the choice is other patients’ experience. Furthermore, contrary to the literature, the obtained results show that at the current moment the patients seeking bariatric surgery have a main role in the hospital choice.
