Abstract:Background: The aim of this research is to examine the scientific evidence for interventions to increase PTG and to reduce PTSD. This research focuses on PTG because its importance has increased in recent years. PTG is not well understood until now. Furthermore, interventions have so far focused on reducing PTSD. Method: The databases Scopus and Web of Science were used. The search terms “Posttraumatic growth”, PTSD and “Intervention OR treatment” were used to identify relevant articles. To see if the articles are relevant for the aim of this study the titles and abstracts is read. There were four exclusion criteria applied (No results, no intervention, qualitative studies, validation). Results: There were 19 articles that deal with interventions with the aim of increasing PTG. A total of 7 studies are about exposure (imaginary or in vivo) type interventions and six studies are about mindfulness interventions. PTSD is measured in ten studies. With the exception of one intervention, all interventions significantly reduced PTSD and increased PTG. The relationship between PTG and PTSD is measured in two studies where there is a negative relationship in one study and no relationship in the other study. Conclusion: There exists a wide variety of interventions to increase PTG and to reduce PTSD. With the exception of one intervention, all interventions increase PTG and reduce PTSD. It seems that there is most evidence for exposure and mindfulness. The other forms of interventions also seem to be effective. However, more research is needed to see whether the interventions are as effective as mindfulness and exposure. Furthermore, the relationship between PTG and PTSD is not clear because it is only measured in two studies. The relationship is negative in one study and there is no relationship found in the other study. On the basis of this finding more research is needed to see which relationship exists between PTG and PTSD.
