Abstract:This bachelor thesis reflects on the process of transforming the Harculo, a diesel train, into a train simulator. This project was done on behalf of Twente’s Local Railway Museum. The goal of this project was to develop a simulator based game using the physical interface of the train. Tv-screens have been placed onto the windows of the train and sensors that measure pressure and rotation, translate the game’s input to output on the screen. The combination of the real meters, levers and buttons of the locomotive and the computer generated landscape and railroad tracks is supposed to make children feel like they are operating the train. There are two versions of the game: one for children of age 4 to 6 and one for children age 7 to 10. The older kids perform a variety of tasks during the game that call on their ability to react to abnormalities, such as an obstacle on the tracks. The younger kids play a continuous version of the game. The total length of the game is about 5 minutes and at the end they will receive a certificate that shows that they are now ‘assistant train operator’.
