Abstract:This exploratory study focuses on the similarities and differences in coping occurring in narrative future imagination among psychiatric patients with anxiety and/or mood disorders and psychiatric patients with personality disorders. Narrative future imagination stands for imagining the future on the basis of stories and has been proven to improve health. Coping is the way a person deals with problems and stress and is not just important during treatment, but also in everyday life. It has been proven that psychiatric patients often use less effective coping styles. By letting them imagine coping styles in narrative future imagination they learn to set goals, increase their motivation for treatment and to anticipate on their lives after treatment. The study is a secondary analysis of letters from the future collected in two previous studies in Germany and the Netherlands. In total, the combined dataset consists of 82 letters, including 40 of psychiatric patients with anxiety and/or mood disorders and 42 of psychiatric patients with personality disorders. The letters from the future were written on the basis of the instrument Letter from the Future. Coping was qualitatively coded using a coding scheme based on modified subscales of the Utrecht Coping List with the addition of the category Religion/spirituality. The letters from the future were qualitatively coded and then analyzed by means of a mixed-methods analysis. All coping styles were found to occur in the letters from the future. In addition, a possible new coping style was identified based on themes from the positive psychology, named Positive flow. The discovery of this category is a finding for both science and health care, as these themes have positive effects on health, wellbeing and quality of life. Therefore Positive flow seems to fit excellently as a proactive coping style in research with a future based approach to psychiatric patients in a recovery process. Psychiatric patients with anxiety and/or mood disorders used more different coping styles in general and used the coping styles Active problem solving and Palliative reaction more in particular than psychiatric patients with personality disorders. Narrative future imagination could, if focused on disorder, be used more often to gain insight into the use of desired coping styles and consequently to improve coping skills or to learn different coping behavior by imagining the use of coping styles in letters from the future.
