| Abstract: | Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Mammography is one of the screening methods to detect breast cancer which is established as a promising technique to identify the early stage of the cancer compared to other screening techniques. Every country has its own policy regarding the mammography screening program. The national screening program in Australia started their national screening program in 1991 for women aged 50 to 69 and has extended their upper age limit up to 74 year in 2013, whereas in the Netherlands the first national screening program was conducted in 1990 for women age 50 to 69 year with the upper age limit of 74 years since 1999. This change in the upper age limit influences the stage at time of detection of breast cancer at certain age groups and the biological characteristics of breast cancer diagnosed in this setting also differs. Therefore this literature overview and comparative study was approached to identify any potential differences in the biological characteristics of breast cancer in elderly women in both screen detected breast cancer compared and non-screen detected breast cancer (included interval cancers). |
