Abstract:Personal recovery focuses on coping with symptoms of mental disorders in order to live a satisfying, hopeful and meaningful life (Anthony, 1993), instead of a focus on becoming completely free of symptoms and healing in a clinical sense. This approach with a focus on development of one’s strengths, without a dominant role for one’s illness is a characteristic of positive psychology. Leamy et al. (2011) use a model with five categories that make up personal recovery: connectedness, hope and optimism about the future, identity, meaning in life, and empowerment. Narrative futuring consists of imagining the future by means of story telling and is linked to processes that are related to personal recovery. A distinctive element of this research is that the connection between narrative futuring and personal recovery is explored under a population that is diagnosed with a personality disorder. The research question is: Is there a relation between the level of recovery and narrative futuring for persons with a personality disorder? Thirty participants were recruited at the mental health care centre ‘Centrum voor Persoonlijkheidsstoornissen, Mediant GGZ’. Data was collected for each participant at one single point in time, where the participant wrote a ‘Letter from the Future’ in order to map the narrative futuring and in addition completed the questionnaire Mental Health Recovery Measure (MHRM) in order to determine the level of recovery. Mixed-method is applied in this study: data is analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The letters were split into types, for which the classification of Sools, Tromp and Mooren (2015) was adopted. The types were subsequently mapped against the MHRM scores of the participants in order to study relations. The qualitative analysis consisted of studying the content of the letters, during which the five categories of personal recovery were measured. The level of personal recovery for persons with a personality disorder showed to be lower compared to other clinical samples. Compared to a sample free of clinical diagnosis, prospective letters showed to be a form of narrative futuring that occurred less for people with a personality disorder. On the other hand, present-oriented advisor letters were overrepresented. In comparison with other forms of narrative futuring, writers of letters with retrospective evaluation showed lower levels of personal recovery. This also applied for writers of letters in which a low number of categories of personal recovery were identified.
