Abstract:Within the domain of safety, there has been increasingly more attention to the use of risk messages to enhance peoples self protective behavior. However there is little known about the influence in the long run. The current research will focus on the longitudinal influences of exposure to a risk message on the receiver on the self protective behavior, as well as on the predictors risk perception, efficacy beliefs (response efficacy & self-efficacy) and social norm. In addition, it looks at a possible way to futher increase self protective behavior by exposing participants repeatedly to a risk message. This study consist of a longitudinal research consisting of three groups: two experimental groups and one controlgroup. In total 301 young children participated in this research. The results show a more positive social norm, more intention of self protective behavior and more actual self proctective behavior in children who were exposed multiple times to a risk message, than in children who were exposed one single time or not at all. These differences between the repeatedly and singular exposed groups seem to be mainly significant in the long run. No significant differences were found between the experimental groups with regard to risk perception and the efficacy beliefs.
