| Abstract: | Background: Chronic pain is a negative emotional experience over a long periode of time without a sense of protection against harm. Previous research showed that acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is successful in helping chronic pain patients to cope with their emotions. However, there is substantial variety in therapy success between patients, which might be explained by therapist-fidelity. Therefore, this study employs therapeutic change process research to investigate the content of e-mail conversations between patients and counselors of an ACT-based online intervention ‘Living with pain’. The aim of this studie is to analyze the ACT-counseling based on the content of the emails. Method: Using the qualitative analysis program Atlas.Ti a selection of 125 feedback e-mails from the counselors was coded based on an existing coding scheme, containing two categories: (1) ACT abilities and (2) motivation and communication strategies. How often and how were ACT processes explained? Which motivation and communication strategies were used to motivate the patient? Result: The dropout in this study is 24.40%, 20 from 82 patients broke up the contact with his or her counselor. The coding of the e-mails from the counselors revealed that 30% of all selected e-mails where about ACT processes and 70% about the use of motivation and communication strategies. Conclusion: The therapeutic change process research reveald the communication strategies of the counselors of the online intervention “Living with pain”. Even though the coding sheme and the analysis of the counseling can be improved, there are outcomes which can be used as a guide for further analysis and improvement of online counseling. |
