Abstract:Background: Nowadays, online treatments are increasingly used and proved efficacious for a broad range of psychological and psychosomatic disorders. Guided treatments seem to be more effective than treatments without psychological support. It still remains unclear what the components of therapist guidance are and how they affect the treatment. The aim of this study is to identify therapist behaviors in an online self-help intervention for increased well-being and the extent to which these behaviors correlate with well-being and satisfaction with the support of the therapist. Method: 351 emails from four therapists, who treated a total of 40 participants were examined using qualitative content analysis. Content-, relationship-, proces- and formrelated categories of therapist behavior were distinguished. With the help of quantitative analyses the influence of these behaviors on well-being and satisfaction with the treatment was determined. Well-being was measured with the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF). Results: 13 distinct therapist behaviors were identified. The most frequent behaviors were 'reinforcement', 'encouraging' and 'empathetic utterances'. None of the behaviors were correlated with well-being. 'Encouraging' and 'psychoeducation' correlated positively with satisfaction with the email support, whilst 'asking insightful questions' and 'unclear, shallow and repetitive comments' were negatively correlated with satisfaction with email support. Conclusion: Therapist behaviors seem to have no influence on well-being, but they influence the satisfaction with the email support from the counselor. This study can be seen as a starting point and source of inspiration for future research in order to further improve online treatments.
