Abstract:Background. The last fifteen years positive psychology has led to a shift from psychopathology to optimal functioning and well-being. However, there is little research conducted into the reasons why people participate in a positive psychological intervention. Aim. The current exploratory study aimed to gain more insight into the motivations of people to participate in the positive psychological self-help intervention "This is your life." Method. The intervention group (N=137) received the book and email counseling. In the present study 122 (N=122) introduction emails of the participants were used in a content analysis. The data were analyzed inductively by the open coding principle and were divided into two main codes from the literature regarding suffering and protective factors. The coding scheme consisted of 2 main codes and 11 subcodes. These codes were then related to the change scores (T1-T0) of the MHC-SF and SCS-SF. Results. Two forms of treatment motivation were found about suffering namely suffering caused by internal factors (inadequate coping skills and rumination / worry) and suffering caused by external factors (work-related stress, stress on family life, illness and loneliness). A large number of participants stated they suffered from work-related stress (n=43) and illness (n=35) and had the primary goal to learn how to cope with this. Protective factors that were mentioned in the emails were social support, hobbies and engaging in activities. Engaging in activities and work-related stress were found to relate positively (r = .211, p = < .05). The change scores of the MHC-SF and SF SCS were also found to be positively related (r = .606, p = < .01). Conclusion. This research has led to a better understanding of the motivation for treatment and protective factors of participants of ‘This is your life’ and could contribute to the recruitment and implementation of positive psychological interventions. Future research could focus on recruiting other target groups in order to check whether the same or other treatment motivations and protective factors can be found.
