Abstract:Introduction: Cancer is an illness that can be physically and emotionally demanding, not only for the patients but also for their social environment. Partners of cancer patients often experience a heightened amount of stress. Besides having to function in their everyday lives, partners face an uncertain future and often have to take care of the cancer patient. Therefore help needs to be offered to those involved in caregiving. Through “Hold on, for each other”, an eHealth intervention based on the “Acceptance and Commitment therapy”, said partners can be supported. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of demographic variables (gender, age, work situation) and cancer-related variables (illness prognosis, duration of the cancer) in order to enhance the effects of “Hold on, for each other”. Method: This study made use of data conducted earlier in a Randomized Control Trial (RCT) including two experimental (automated and personal feedback) and one control group. Only participants who completed both surveys, one before and one after the intervention, were used for the analysis (N=139). First the two experimental conditions were merged into one. Then the experimental group (N=86) and the control group (N=53) were compared based on their scores on the factors fear and depression (HADS-Total, HADS-A, HADS-D), positive mental health (MHC) and caregiver distress (CSI). First it was tested if there is an effect of the intervention. Using a repeated measures ANOVA, the influence of the demographic and cancer-related variables on the effect of the intervention was then tested. Results: The intervention ‘Hold on, for eacht other’ isn’t effective. Furthermore the results showed that there was no significant influence of the demographic or cancer-related variables on the effect of the intervention. The factors work situation and illness prognosis on the other hand showed some trends. The psychological distress and especially the level of depression decreased for the experimental group of people who work less than 20 hours per week. In addition the intervention appears to be effective for partners of a patient with the possibility of a complete recovery. Conclusion: The study at hand shows that the intervention “Hold on, for each other” works just as good for men as it does for women and that there is no difference in effect between different ages or different durations of the cancer. Further research determining the relationship between the work situation or the illness prognosis and the effect of “Hold on, for each other” will be needed.
