Abstract:This study aims to determine the cost-effectiveness of a medication review in patients with Parkinson´s disease (PD). The study is based on a randomized controlled trial performed in the Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) in Enschede and in the Ziekenhuisgroep Twente (ZGT) in Almelo and Hengelo, in The Netherlands. At this moment a medication review is not included in the general health care of patients with Parkinson´s disease, because the cost-effectivity is not proven yet. Therefore, the study question is: Is the medication review cost-effective in comparison to the current health care for PD patients? In total 76 patients were included in this cost-effectiveness analysis. Medication costs, hospitalization costs, outpatient visit costs and costs for the execution of medication reviews were collected and analyzed. Information about medication was provided by pharmacists and the other cost data was provided by the hospitals. Furthermore, EQ-5D index values and quality adjusted life years (QALY) were calculated and analyzed to determine the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER). These EQ-5D questionnaires were completed by the participating patients and provided by the hospitals for further analyses.
